Dolphins and Manatees and Fish, Oh My | The Riverview Hotel & Spa

Get a close look at the dolphins, manatees, birds and countless fish that make the Florida shores their home! Our stretch of shoreline is part of the Indian River Lagoon Estuary, a unique environment crucial to the survival of thousands of species, including over 50 threatened or endangered species. Here, fresh water and salt water mix and many young animals make the estuary their home. The Marine Discovery Center, located less than 10 minutes from our New Smyrna Beach hotel, offers several guided tours and activities that take visitors out around the Indian River Lagoon, for excursions that are both educational and truly enjoyable. Book a kayak trip where you can paddle over oyster beds, through winding backwater channels and mangroves. Keep an eye out for a number of birds that inhabit these coastal lands such as herons, egrets, ibises and even bald eagles! Or you can choose to take a boat tour, where you’ll be able to spot Atlantic bottlenose dolphins jumping out of the water, manatees gently swimming along with their young, sea turtles traversing the River, and more. All tours are guided by a certified Florida Coastal Naturalist, who are more than happy to share their extensive knowledge on these unique and protected ecosystems. As the most diverse estuary system in North America, the Indian River Lagoon is a precious natural resource that the community works hard to protect. The Marine Discovery Center also offers a variety of programs and summer camps appropriate for children of all ages, ranging from the Sea Squirts Program for children 2-5 years old, to a Scuba Diving program for children up to 16 years old. With activities for the whole family, a visit to the MDC is a worthy inclusion to your New Smyrna vacation and an opportunity to become familiar with the beautiful and diverse Florida wildlife.
