Take a Tip from the Timucan

For the animal lovers out there, Florida is one of the best states to get to know wildlife on land and by sea. If you’re visiting the Riverview Hotel and Spa, one thing you absolutely must do is get to the Turtle Mound National Historic Site, located just a twenty minute drive from our resort.

At the top of the mound—oyster shells pulled together by the Timucan Native Americans—you’ll find a one of a kind view of preserved, old Florida landscapes. Between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River, this strip of protected land offers more than the regular Florida beach experience. No condos or houses line the beaches of this national park, so enjoy a run or bike ride on the beach in this nature-friendly zone.

If you’re lucky, you might find a turtle nest. Go at the right time, and watch these resilient creatures follow the moon to the sea and make their way in life. Maybe a manatee or dolphin will be lounging around the Mosquito Lagoon on site, or pilot whales will visit the shores. Feel free to take a kayak out to get a closer look at these beautiful animals. When the heat gets to be too much, head into the visitor center to take a break and watch a movie on the history of Cape Canaveral.

A quick tip: It is called "Mosquito Lagoon" for a reason; make sure to bring some bug spray if you plan to stay at the Turtle Mound a while. When you’ve finished at the Turtle Mound, return to your room here to nurse those mosquito bites and get a good night’s sleep for your next adventure.
