ldora State House

Located just a short drive south of Riverview Hotel on the Canaveral National Seashore is Eldora, Florida, a reinvigorated ghost town and home to the recently renovated, history-rich Eldora Statehouse. Take the scenic Atlantic Avenue south along the coast and through Mosquito Lagoon Aquatic Preserve and passed Bethune Beach. Along the way, you’ll pass acres upon acres of protected natural aquatic habitat in Mosquito Lagoon, the body of water seperaeted from the ocean by barrier islands where fresh and seawater mix to sustain an abundance of life

Mangrove islands will fill your view on the inland side. Here, you might catch a glimpse of any number of the local fauna. Keep your eyes peeled for the manatee that frequent the area, as well as the dolphin and sea turtles. At the very north end of the Canaveral National Seashore, you’ll find Eldora’s newly restored residences rich with stories and information about the history and landscape of the once-abandoned town.

A visit to the beautiful, palm-encircled Statehouse will enlighten all travelers as videos, historic photographs, and artifacts dot the structure and surrounding area. Eldora was settled in 1877 and was home to a small waterfront community of 100 before the town was abandoned in 1900. The community, which was sustained by the local fishery and agricultural resources, depended on the Indian River waterways to move their crops and goods to market to the north. Unfortunately, after a massive freeze in the winter of 1894-95, Eldora’s citrus groves died out. By 1900, the north-south railroad bypassed the town and rendered the Indian River waterways obsolete for the transportation of goods.

Today, the Statehouse is also located in a prime place for catching a beautiful sunset over the lagoon and, in the right summer months, you just might be joined by large groups of manatees. After getting your fill of the history and natural beauty Eldora has on offer, head back for a seafood dinner and cocktails at Riverview’s Grille.
