Ponce de Leon Immortalized
Juan Ponce de Leon first traveled from Spain to the Americas on Columbus’s second voyage. He served as a colonial military leader in Hispaniola and as the first Governor of Puerto Rico under the Spanish Crown. Best known today for his epic (and, it turns out, mythic) search for the Fountain of Youth, you’ll find him immortalized just a few miles from our hotel at the Ponce de Leon Lighthouse. Climb all 203 steps to the summit of the lighthouse (approximately 175 feet) for a splendid panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean, inlet, and inland waterways. You’ll also have the chance to explore the historic lighthouse keeper’s quarters, the oil house, the generator room, and a lens museum. Guided tours are available year round, and they are very popular, so we suggest calling ahead of time to secure yourself a spot.
